A Komodo photography boat trip on Akassa Collection is a private phinisi charter planned around the hour of the light: Padar before sunrise, Kalong at dusk. Four boats carry 10 to 18 guests, and the whole boat for 3D2N starts at IDR 45,000,000 (≈ USD 2,761).

The hour for each island: where the light works

Every stop has its hour and its direction: sunrise from the east, sunset in the west. Padar sunrise falls between about 05:31 and 06:18 WITA across the year, and sunset between about 17:49 and 18:27.

  • Padar: first light, east. The ridge climb takes 25 to 45 minutes, so you leave the boat well before the sun.
  • Pink Beach: morning. The sand is pale pink from red coral fragments, and its tone shifts with light and tide.
  • Komodo Island: morning. Ranger-guided treks run 45 to 120 minutes, with little shade.
  • Kalong: dusk, west. Flying foxes leave the mangroves, and you watch from the boat.
  • Kelor: the first stop of day 1. A short hike reaches a bay viewpoint.
  • Manta Point: morning. The current is strong, so a life jacket is advised. Sightings are not guaranteed.
  • Taka Makassar: morning. The sandbank shows mainly at low tide.
  • Kanawa: midday. White sand over a shallow reef, about 90 minutes.

Light is weather. Cloud and haze change a morning, and no hour is guaranteed.

Frame the party: ten or fewer, or eleven to eighteen

Find your head count and read across. Every total is the whole boat for 3D2N on the 2026 card.

Up to 10 guests, Giona is the lowest price. Derya adds the Padar VIP Suite balcony and bathtub for more space, and Akassa Cruise, with 3 suites and a hot water system, is the most private. Semesta Voyages is the only boat above 10, and from the 13th guest it adds IDR 5,000,000 (≈ USD 307) each on 3D2N.

Giona, Derya and Akassa Cruise do not take a party of 11 or more. The compare page walks through the choice.

What a private charter costs, by route and group

Whole-boat fares start on Giona: IDR 38,000,000 (≈ USD 2,331) for 2D1N, IDR 45,000,000 (≈ USD 2,761) for 3D2N and IDR 54,500,000 (≈ USD 3,344) for 4D3N, for 1 to 5 guests. Bigger parties and the other three boats cost more, and the charter page lists every band. Prices are for 2026, updated 26 October 2026.

The fare covers the boat and crew, three meals, water, coffee and tea, snorkeling gear, a paddle board, a tender and canoes. Pickup in Labuan Bajo is free.

Two things stay outside a private charter: a guide, and photo or video documentation. We quote either on request. Park tickets and ranger fees are always extra.

June to August runs on a higher card, which we quote in writing. For 2027 private rates, ask us. Until that card is out, the 2026 card applies and we confirm it on WhatsApp.

Prefer to share? Friday departures, secondary

This site is built around the private charter. If you'd rather buy a seat than a boat, there is one shared departure a week, 3D2N from Friday to Sunday, on all four phinisi.

Cabins on the Friday open trip are sold by the person, from IDR 4,600,000 (≈ USD 282), with a local guide and photo or video documentation included. A date goes ahead once its minimum cabins are booked, 2 on three boats and 3 on Giona. We confirm availability in writing before you pay.

The next one leaves on Friday, 6 November 2026. The departures page lists every date by boat, and the cabins page lists every seat fare.

Fixed dates: every Friday. A date runs once its minimum cabins are booked, and seats on each boat are confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay.

Departure calendar

A three-day shot list from Kelor to Kanawa

  • 1. Day 1, from 10:00: board at the harbor, then Kelor and lunch.
  • 2. Afternoon: snorkel at Manjarite.
  • 3. Dusk: Kalong, flying foxes leaving the mangroves.
  • 4. Day 2, before sunrise: Padar ridge in east light.
  • 5. Morning: a ranger trek on Komodo, then Pink Beach and Manta Point.
  • 6. Day 3, morning: Taka Makassar sandbank, then Kanawa, back by 14:00.

Treat it as a sample. On the day the captain sets the order of stops and the anchorage, and where the boat spends the night comes down to the weather and the captain's call.

Taka Makassar shows only at low tide, so the tide sets that stop. The 3 days 2 nights page has the minutes for every stop and the full day tables.

Photographers, couples and small groups

Photographers and creators pick the boat for its deck. Derya's white sundeck, from IDR 62,000,000 (≈ USD 3,804) for the whole boat, gives shade at midday and open sky at first light.

Couples want a door that opens on the horizon. Akassa Cruise has private balconies on Laut and Langit, from IDR 70,000,000 (≈ USD 4,294), and Derya's Padar VIP Suite does the same for less.

Friends and small groups divide the boat. Giona carries 6 to 10 guests from IDR 52,000,000 (≈ USD 3,190), and Semesta Voyages carries 11 to 18 from IDR 106,000,000 (≈ USD 6,503).

Each of the three has its own page with a boat, the hours and the numbers. A drone needs a park permit first, and we don't promise drone footage.

Light by month: dry sky, windy weeks, crowded dates

The wet months run from January to March, with heavy showers and the roughest seas. April to November is dry. Calm, clear weeks fall in April to June and October to November.

July and August bring wind, and they are also the crowd months, together with December. Anchorages fill, and the higher June to August card applies.

Sunrise at Padar moves from about 05:31 in the late dry season to about 06:18 in July. Sunset at Kalong moves between about 17:49 and 18:27. The when-to-go page has the month-by-month grid and the sunrise table.

Haze and cloud take hours from a day, and no hour of light or sunset is guaranteed. The captain's call on the sea comes first.

Pickup, extras and who handles your booking

Pickup in Labuan Bajo is free, from your hotel, the airport or the harbor, in both directions. A larger vehicle for a big party is quoted as its own line.

Special dinners, decoration and a photographer are quoted within hours, and nothing is added without a written quote. Drone flying in the park starts with a permit, and drone footage is never part of the promise.

If the boat can't sail, you move to a phinisi of equal or higher standard on the same date at no extra cost. A full refund within 14 days is the alternative.

Reviews from guests of trips we booked, not of one of the four boats

“Freedivers, listen up: the visibility was absolutely insane — 30+ metres on good days. Taka Makassar was my favourite, white sand bottom at 15 m that looks like a desert paradise underwater.”

“Pengalaman yang luar biasa!”

Translated from Indonesian: an amazing experience.

“Very good boat, good experience, and fulfilled my dream to see a Komodo dragon.”

FAQ

Can we book a Komodo photography boat trip for just two people?

Yes. Giona's whole boat for 2 guests costs IDR 45,000,000 (≈ USD 2,761) for 3D2N, and Akassa Cruise costs IDR 70,000,000 (≈ USD 4,294). If you would rather share, a Friday seat starts at IDR 4,600,000 (≈ USD 282) per person and a guide is included.

Which Akassa boat suits a group of 12?

Semesta Voyages. Giona, Derya and Akassa Cruise stop at 10 guests. For 12 guests the 3D2N whole boat on Semesta Voyages costs IDR 106,000,000 (≈ USD 6,503), which is IDR 8,830,000 (≈ USD 542) each. The same flat fare applies to any party from 1 to 12.

Is the guide or photographer included in a private charter?

No. Neither comes with a private charter, but we can arrange both on request and quote them separately. The Friday departure is different: there the local guide and documentation are included.

Can I fly a drone on this trip?

Only with a park permit, applied for in advance. Kalong, Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones. We never promise drone footage, and our drone rules guide lists the permit steps and the park rules.

How many hours of light do we get at Padar?

Padar sunrise falls between about 05:31 and 06:18 WITA across the year. The climb takes 25 to 45 minutes, and the stop runs about 90 minutes. Clouds and haze change the morning, and no hour of light is guaranteed.
