Komodo content creator trip shot list, hour by hour
Updated 26 October 2026
A Komodo content creator trip shot list for a 3D2N private boat has seven frames: Kelor, Kalong at dusk, Padar at first light, the dragon walk, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Taka Makassar. Each frame has an hour and a light direction. No hour of light is guaranteed.
Seven frames in time order
Pin this to the wall before you pack. The list follows the 3D2N route, and the order of stops is the captain's call on the day.
- 1. Day 1, near midday: Kelor ridge, a short climb, the bay below.
- 2. Day 1, dusk: Kalong, bats leaving the mangroves, watched from the boat.
- 3. Day 2, before sunrise: Padar ridge, three bays, light from the east.
- 4. Day 2, after breakfast: Komodo Island, a ranger-led walk, closed shoes.
- 5. Day 2, after Komodo: Pink Beach, pale pink sand, high sun.
- 6. Day 2, afternoon: Manta Point, current and mantas, sightings never promised.
- 7. Day 3, morning: Taka Makassar sandbar, visible at low tide only.
Light is weather, and that's the one rule. Clouds and haze rewrite the list, and no hour of light is guaranteed. Treat each line as plan A, with the captain holding plan B.
The sections below give each frame its hour, its light direction and one practical note. Where a time is shown, it is a computed figure for the Padar and Kalong area, accurate to about 2 minutes, and not a promise.
Day 1, a ridge by morning and bats at dusk
Kelor is the warm-up. The islet sits about an hour by boat from Labuan Bajo. The climb to the viewpoint takes 15 to 30 minutes on a steep, dry path, and shoes with grip matter more than any lens. After a 10:00 boarding the route reaches Kelor near midday, so expect high sun and flat light. Go for the shape of the ridge and the bay, not the color.
Kalong is the first real frame. Sun in the west. It drops behind the hills. Across the year it goes down between 17:49 and 18:27. The first bats come out about a quarter of an hour after sunset, and the stream runs for about 30 minutes. Be on deck early, camera already set, so the first minutes of the stream don't catch you changing a lens or hunting for a spare battery in the dark.
You watch from the boat. Kalong is not a landing stop, and flying a drone there is not allowed under the park's rules. Frame wide and let the sky do the work. The hills turn into a dark line, and the crew's timing decides where the boat sits.
Sunset times by month are below. They are computed, and cloud decides what the sky does with them.
| Month | Sunset | Bats fly from about |
|---|---|---|
| January | 18:27 | 18:42 |
| February | 18:26 | 18:41 |
| March | 18:15 | 18:30 |
| April | 17:58 | 18:13 |
| May | 17:49 | 18:04 |
| June | 17:50 | 18:05 |
| July | 17:57 | 18:12 |
| August | 18:00 | 18:15 |
| September | 17:58 | 18:13 |
| October | 17:55 | 18:10 |
| November | 18:01 | 18:16 |
| December | 18:14 | 18:29 |
Computed for the location, within about 2 minutes. The crew moves the wake-up call with the weather.
Day 2, Padar before the sun
Padar is the frame everyone wants, and it asks for an early start. Plan to be off the boat about 65 minutes ahead of sunrise. The climb to the main viewpoint takes about 25 to 45 minutes, so a head torch goes in the bag next to the camera.
The sun rises in the east, and the first light rakes across the ridge while the far side of the hills stays in shade. Sunrise at Padar falls at about 05:39 in October and about 06:18 in July. The table below gives every month.
Watch for the ridge going to silhouette, and for the three bays, each with its own color of sand. For a few minutes before the sun clears the hills the sky goes pastel. Haze, cloud and the captain's decision can take any of it away.
Padar entry is timed. The session for your date is confirmed in writing before you pay, and our rules note for photographers explains the permits. Read it before you plan the alarm.
| Month | Sunrise | Leave the boat by | On the ridge by |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 05:54 | 04:49 | 05:34 |
| February | 06:05 | 05:00 | 05:45 |
| March | 06:06 | 05:01 | 05:46 |
| April | 06:04 | 04:59 | 05:44 |
| May | 06:07 | 05:02 | 05:47 |
| June | 06:14 | 05:09 | 05:54 |
| July | 06:18 | 05:13 | 05:58 |
| August | 06:12 | 05:07 | 05:52 |
| September | 05:56 | 04:51 | 05:36 |
| October | 05:39 | 04:34 | 05:19 |
| November | 05:31 | 04:26 | 05:11 |
| December | 05:38 | 04:33 | 05:18 |
Computed for the location, within about 2 minutes. The crew moves the wake-up call with the weather.
Dragons, pink sand and a reef drift
On day 2 the dragon walk comes after breakfast. A ranger leads every trek and there is little shade. The dragons are wild, so a sighting is never guaranteed. Wear closed shoes. Shoot low, and from where the ranger puts you, because the ranger sets the distance.
Pink Beach follows. The sand is pale pink, not bright pink, tinted by fragments of red coral. On the sample route the boat arrives after Komodo, so the sun is high rather than low. Let the water carry the frame instead: turquoise over reef, with shallows close to shore. A morning visit gives softer light, and the captain decides on the day whether the order allows it.
Manta Point is a current, not a lagoon. The boat drifts guests along the reef with the current, a life jacket is advised, and sightings depend on tide and current. They are never guaranteed, so plan the frame around the reef and treat a manta as a gift.
Shoot the transit too. The ride between islands is where the boat itself is in your frame. The hull, the masts and the wake belong in a reel as much as the beach does.
Day 3, Taka Makassar and the last frames
Taka Makassar is a crescent sandbar in shallow reef, and it is visible only at low tide. At high tide it can be underwater, and nobody walks it then. There is little shade on the sand, so a hat and reef-safe sunscreen go with you.
Kanawa Island follows on the route, with white sand and shallow coral for an easy snorkel. Then lunch on board and the harbor, with check-out by 14:00. Finish your last frames by noon, then pack.
On Derya the photographs show two daybeds on the teak bow under a white sail awning. That's where I'd sit to go through the morning's frames. Giona, Akassa Cruise and Semesta Voyages each have a sundeck with lazy chairs.
The boat decides how much of the shoot you can spread out. Parties of up to 10 fit Akassa Cruise, Derya or Giona. Parties of 11 to 18 need Semesta Voyages, the only boat above 10. A shoot with a model, a second shooter and friends fills a small boat quickly, so count heads before you pick.
Limits the shot list cannot move
A guide and photo or video documentation sit outside a private charter. Both are on request, quoted separately. Park tickets and ranger fees are never in the fare.
Flying a drone in the park needs a SIMAKSI permit and a daily drone ticket, applied for in advance. Kalong, Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones. We never promise drone footage, and who files the permit is something to settle with us in writing before you pay. Our drone rules guide has the detail.
Nothing on the list is a promise. Weather, tide and the captain's call move the order of stops, a stop can drop out, and the anchorage is chosen on the day.
Whole-boat 3D2N on Giona starts at IDR 45,000,000 (≈ USD 2,761) for 1 to 5 guests. The cost page divides it by your party.

FAQ
How early do we leave the boat for the Padar sunrise?
Off the boat about 65 minutes ahead of sunrise. In October sunrise falls at about 05:39, so the climb starts in the dark with a head torch. The climb takes about 25 to 45 minutes. The captain sets the final time on the day, and cloud decides the sky.
Can I fly a drone on the trip?
Only with a SIMAKSI permit and a daily drone ticket, applied for in advance, and never at Kalong, Komodo Island or Rinca. We promise no drone footage. Ask us who files the application before you pay, and read the park rule on the booking system.
Is a photographer or videographer included?
Not on a private charter. The guide and photo or video documentation are on request and quoted separately. On a Friday departure the local guide and documentation are included. Say which one you want when you send your party size and dates.
