Padar sunrise vs sunset: which is better
Updated 26 October 2026
Padar sunrise vs sunset: sunrise is the stronger choice on a boat trip. The air is cooler, the stop sits at first light on our routes, and sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18. Padar at sunset works only if the boat is there in the afternoon. Our routes call at Padar once, at first light.
Light direction and color
East at sunrise. West at sunset. That is the whole difference in direction, and it decides what the three bays do for you.
At sunrise the sun comes up over the water to the east, low and flat, and the first light reaches the ridge before it reaches the bays. At sunset it drops in the west and the light runs the other way. Padar is a short hike to a viewpoint over three differently colored bays, so both hours give you the colors. What changes is where the shadow sits.
Look at the bays on the first morning, then decide where to stand. Low sun lengthens every shadow on the slopes, which is the look most people climb for.
| Month | Sunrise at Padar | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| January | 05:54 | East |
| April | 06:04 | East |
| July | 06:18 | East |
| October | 05:39 | East |
Times are local, WITA, computed within about 2 minutes. They are not an official table, and clouds or haze can take the hour away. No hour of light is guaranteed.
Crowds and park sessions
Padar entry is timed. The session for your date is confirmed in writing before you pay. The first session of the day is the one that holds sunrise, which is why most boats aim for it.
A shared slot at the best hour is shared by every boat that wants the same frame, and a private charter does not change that. It changes only when your party leaves the boat.
Padar at sunset is a different question. It is not on the routes, so ask us in writing before you build a plan around it.
Heat, climb and safety
Plan on about 90 minutes at the stop. That is the time for Padar, from landing to the boat.
The climb to the main viewpoint takes about 25 to 45 minutes, and the upper ridge takes longer. The climb is moderate. Parts of the path are loose and steep, so sturdy shoes matter, and the boats' own packing list names shoes with grip and a head torch for Padar.
Plan to leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise. That puts you on the path in the dark and at the viewpoint as the color starts.
Morning is cooler than afternoon. On a hot day that is the strongest reason to choose sunrise: the same hike at three in the afternoon is the same hike in more sun. Carry water and wear reef-safe sunscreen. Sun on a deck is strong. Plan for sun on the trail.
Rain changes the trail. A wet slope is slower and slipperier, and the ranger and the captain decide on the day whether the climb goes ahead. If it does not, the plan changes with the weather, and no hour of light is guaranteed.
Fit for the climb means ordinary walking fitness and good shoes. If someone in your party cannot climb, the boat is still anchored below for the morning.
What to do from a boat
On our routes you do not have to choose. Sunset belongs to Kalong. Sunrise belongs to Padar.
The 3D2N route boards at Labuan Bajo from 10:00 on day 1, calls at Kelor, lunches, stops at Manjarite and reaches Kalong at dusk for the flying foxes. Day 2 opens with Padar at first light, then breakfast on board, then Komodo. The 2D1N and 4D3N routes put Padar in the same place, first stop of day 2.
That order is an example. The captain decides the order of stops and the anchorage on the day, from the weather and the tide. Where the boat spends the night depends on the weather and the captain's decision that day.
If you want Padar at sunset, say so before you pay. It is not on the routes, it depends on the boat's position and the weather, and we confirm it in writing or we do not offer it.
The hour, on the boat: Padar, first stop of day 2, landing before first light. Breakfast on board once you are back. Kalong is the evening before, at dusk.
Which one to choose
Sunrise. For a boat trip, choose Padar at sunrise.
The reasons are plain. The stop sits in the route at first light. The air is cooler. The first session of the day is the one that holds sunrise.
- Padar, first light: east, low sun, the ridge before the bays. Sunrise between 05:31 and 06:18 through the year.
- Kalong, dusk: west, the flying foxes leaving the mangroves. About 60 minutes at the stop.
- Padar at sunset: only on request, only in writing, never promised.
Pick one morning and give it your full attention. Charge the batteries the night before and put the shoes by the door. Then look at the light calendar for your month and the drone rules if you fly.
When you are ready, send us your party size and your month. We price the whole boat for the route that puts you on the ridge at first light.
FAQ
Which Padar session should I book for sunrise?
The first session of the day, since it is the one that holds sunrise. We confirm the session for your date in writing before you pay. The captain sets the landing time on the day, and no hour of light is guaranteed.
How early should I leave for the Padar sunrise?
Leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise, then climb 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint. Sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 through the year, and the itinerary puts the Padar trek at around 05:00 to 07:00. The crew sets the wake-up call the evening before.
How crowded is the Padar trail at sunrise?
Sunrise is the slot most boats choose, and a private charter does not change that. It changes only when your party lands. Padar is busiest in July, August and December. Ask the crew about the hour on the day.
What do I carry for the Padar climb?
Water, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, shoes with grip and a head torch for the dark start. Morning is cooler than afternoon, which is the best reason to climb at first light rather than later in the day.
What if it rains on the morning of the hike?
A wet trail is slower and slipperier. The ranger and the captain decide on the day whether the climb goes ahead, and the plan moves with the weather. No hour of light is guaranteed. If the climb is called off, the boat stays at anchor and the morning continues.
