First time in Indonesia: Komodo travel basics

Updated 26 October 2026

Komodo travel for a first time in Indonesia comes down to a few facts: fly to Labuan Bajo, check your visa, carry rupiah for park fees, and plan uploads for the hotel, not the boat. A private charter boards at 10:00 and checks out by 14:00. Park fees for foreigners are IDR 250,000 per day.

What to sort out before you fly: visa and passport

Start with the passport. It decides the visa, the park ticket line and the boarding pass.

Indonesia lets nationals of 97 listed countries buy a visa on arrival. Other nationalities apply in advance online. The table below carries the date checked on every line.

Rules and fees change. Check your own government's travel advice and the Indonesian immigration site before you book flights.

Passport validity and an onward ticket are the usual checks at the immigration desk. Read the current rule for your nationality, not a list from a blog.

For the trip itself we need each guest's passport details a week before sailing. The boarding pass names must match the manifest, and the park ticket needs the same details.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.
Length of stay30 days from the day you arrive, single entry
ExtensionOnce, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end.
Visa-free entry30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Flying in: routes to Labuan Bajo

The airport is Komodo International Airport, code LBJ, close to town and about 10 minutes by car from the harbor area.

Most travelers connect through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya. Bali to Labuan Bajo takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. Surabaya is about 1 hour 30 minutes, Jakarta about 2 hours 30 minutes or more, and Lombok about 1 hour. Direct international flights are limited, so plan one connection inside Indonesia.

Land the day before sailing. A private charter boards at 10:00, and a flight that is late on boarding day is the plain way a trip loses its first morning. The hotels page lists where to sleep.

Flight times are approximate, and airlines change schedules. We sell no flights and quote none. Book the plane after we confirm the date in writing.

Money, connectivity and power

Cash first. The currency is the rupiah. ATMs are in Labuan Bajo town and at the airport, and none are on the islands. Take cash before boarding.

Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants, and some places add a surcharge. Small shops, markets and taxis want cash or QRIS. Tips for the crew and the guide are outside the fare, and a tip is appreciated, not compulsory. Ranger and pier levies are paid on the day, so keep small rupiah notes in a dry bag.

Connectivity is the second limit. On Akassa Cruise, Derya and Giona it is local Wi-Fi, not satellite. Semesta Voyages has satellite internet. We promise no speed on any boat.

A SIM card must be registered with a passport. Set up an eSIM before you fly if your phone takes one.

Power is 230 volts with two-round-pin plugs, types C and F. No boat promises a charging point in the cabin, so bring a power bank for every phone.

CurrencyIndonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026
ATMsBCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board.
ATM limitsIDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges
Cards or cashCards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash.
TippingAppreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range.

Water, health and sun

Do not drink tap water in Indonesia. The boats carry free-flow mineral water, and the bottle in your hand at Padar should be sealed.

Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended for every guest. The fare does not include it.

Mosquito-borne illness is present in Indonesia, so cover up at dusk and use repellent. The best-equipped hospital on Flores is in Labuan Bajo, and serious cases are flown out. That is a reason to buy the insurance, not a reason to worry.

Pharmacies in town have a limited choice. Bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home, and pack a head torch and shoes with grip for Padar and Kelor.

Sun is the daily risk. Wear reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, carry water on every hike, and expect the deck to be bright. Heat is stronger at midday than at the two light hours that this site is built around.

The dry season runs from April to November and the wet season from December to March. Seas are calmer in the dry months and rougher from December to February. The weather moves the plan more than the calendar does, and the captain decides on the day.

Tap waterNot safe to drink; use sealed bottled or filtered water

Etiquette and park rules

Labuan Bajo is a mixed port town on a mostly Catholic island. Dress modestly away from the beach and the boat: shoulders and knees covered in town, in churches and in villages. Swimwear belongs to the boat and the beaches.

Use the right hand to give and to receive. A light handshake or a nod is a greeting.

In the park the rules are the park's. Dragon treks at Komodo Island and Rinca are ranger-led, and the ranger sets the distance. Never feed an animal. A drone needs a SIMAKSI permit and a daily ticket, and a drone is never allowed at Kalong. The drone rules guide has the sources.

Sailing permission in Labuan Bajo belongs to the harbor authority, and park access to the park authority. Both can close a route at short notice for weather. If the boat cannot sail, we put you on a phinisi of equal or higher standard on the same date, or refund in full within 14 days.

Passengers need a boarding pass with a name that matches the manifest, so carry your passport on the day.

ReligionFlores is mostly Roman Catholic; Labuan Bajo is a mixed port town with a Muslim minority and Bajo coastal communities
DressCover shoulders and knees in town, in churches, mosques and villages; swimwear only at pools, on beaches and on boats
MannersGive, receive and eat with the right hand; greet with a light handshake or a nod. During Ramadan most restaurants in Labuan Bajo stay open; avoid eating conspicuously near mosques.

Who decidesThe harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park
Boarding passPassengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you
Safety on boardThe harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit
Recent closures1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open.

FAQ

Can I take a day trip from Bali to Komodo Island?

No. We sell no day trip. The shortest route is 2D1N from Labuan Bajo, and the flight from Bali takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. A day trip would spend most of the day in airports and little of it at the stops where the light works.

Can you do a Komodo tour from Lombok?

Every boat leaves from Labuan Bajo harbor only, and every route ends there. Lombok connects to Labuan Bajo by a flight of about 1 hour on smaller airlines. We do not run a boat from Lombok to Komodo. Fly to Labuan Bajo, land the day before, and the trip starts from the harbor.

How do I get from Lombok to Komodo Island?

Fly to Labuan Bajo, where the boats board. Komodo Island is a stop on every route and is reached by sea from the harbor, with the order of stops set by the captain on the day. A direct Lombok to Komodo boat is not a trip we sell.

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?

Nationals of 97 listed countries can buy a visa on arrival, and other nationalities apply in advance online. Rules and fees change, so check your government's travel advice and the Indonesian immigration site before you book flights. The table above carries the date checked.
