Komodo National Park photo locations, by the hour

Updated 26 October 2026

Komodo National Park photo locations on the Akassa Collection routes number 7 stops: Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Kalong, Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Kelor. Sunrise points east and sunset points west, so the order of stops matters. The 3D2N route calls at all 7.

Plan my route

Seven stops and the hour each one works

Each stop has one hour where its light works, so read the lines as a shot list pinned to a wall: spot, hour, direction, one practical note.

  • Padar · first light · sunrise from the east · climb 25 to 45 minutes, about 90 minutes at the stop
  • Pink Beach · morning, low sun · color is pale pink, paler at midday · about 90 minutes, snorkeling
  • Komodo Island · morning · little shade on the trail · ranger-led treks from Loh Liang, about 2 hours
  • Kalong · dusk · sunset in the west · flying foxes leave the mangroves, watched from the boat, about 60 minutes
  • Manta Point · morning · reef drift with the current · snorkel with a life jacket, about 60 minutes, sightings not guaranteed
  • Taka Makassar · morning at low tide · a crescent sandbank inside shallow reef · about 60 minutes
  • Kelor · morning · a short climb to a bay viewpoint · about 60 minutes, first stop of day 1

Sunrise and sunset times come from a computed sun table in local time. They are about, never exact, because one cloud bank at the horizon moves the usable light further than any table can. Treat them as a plan.

East for sunrise, west for sunset: reading the stops

East at dawn. West at dusk. That is the whole rule. It sorts seven stops faster than any map can, because only two of them are tied to the sun.

Two stops belong to the sun itself. Padar is the sunrise stop and Kalong is the sunset stop. Between the two, the other five work in the softer morning light, before the hours after lunch flatten the water and the sky. Morning first. Then dusk.

Sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 across the year, and sunset between 17:49 and 18:27. The July sunrise at Padar is about 06:18. The November one is about 05:31.

Kalong sits between Komodo and Rinca. Where the boat anchors decides which side of the islet you face. The captain decides the anchorage on the day, so we promise no angle, only the hour. Nothing in this list is a compass bearing. It is a rule of the sky, applied to whichever anchorage the captain picks.

Names on the route that have no page

Five more names appear on the routes. Route stops. No page of their own, and nothing here links to them.

  • Kanawa · white sand and a shallow reef · midday, about 90 minutes · day 3 of 3D2N, day 4 of 4D3N
  • Gili Lawa Darat · a northern island with a hilltop viewpoint and a reef nearby · about 90 minutes · day 3 of 4D3N
  • Sebayur · beaches and reefs near Flores · midday, about 90 minutes · day 3 of 4D3N
  • Rangko Cave · a trek stop, shoes with grip and a head torch · day 4 of 4D3N
  • Bidadari · the last stop before lunch on day 4 of 4D3N

Manjarite is the day 1 afternoon snorkel stop on all three routes.

The park's rules that shape the hour

The fare excludes park tickets and ranger fees. The ticket is IDR 250,000 for international guests and IDR 50,000 for Indonesian guests on weekdays. The park fees page lists the rest.

Entry to Padar and Komodo is timed. The session for your date is confirmed in writing before the boat leaves the harbor.

Drone rules are a separate matter. Flying one needs a SIMAKSI permit and a daily drone ticket, applied for in advance. Kalong, Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones, and we never promise drone footage. The drone rules guide carries the rule and its sources.

On the day, the captain sets the order of stops and picks the anchorage. The weather and the captain's decision that day decide where the boat spends the night. The light calendar shows which months give each stop its best hour.

FAQ

Which Komodo stop is best at sunrise?

Padar. The ridge looks over three bays with differently colored sand, and the route makes it the first stop of day 2. Sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 by month. Gili Lawa Darat is also a sunrise viewpoint, but it appears only on the 4D3N route.

Which stops face west at sunset?

Kalong is the sunset stop on every route, and the show is watched from the boat. Sunset falls between 17:49 and 18:27 by month. We promise no angle on the islet, because the captain decides the anchorage on the day.

Do all four boats call at the same stops?

Yes. All four boats sail the same three routes, 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N, and only the guest ceiling differs between them. Three take up to 10 guests. Semesta Voyages takes up to 18.

Can we skip a stop?

Tell us at booking. The route is an example, and the captain decides the order and the stops on the day, so a skipped stop is a conversation, not a form. The fare follows the party and the route length, not the stops.

How long do we stay at each stop?

Padar and Pink Beach, about 90 minutes each. Komodo Island, about 2 hours. Kalong, Manta Point, Taka Makassar and Kelor, about 60 minutes each. Kanawa, Gili Lawa Darat and Sebayur, about 90 minutes each, with the captain adjusting every one of them for tide, wind and light.
