Komodo Island dragons photography from a boat trip

Updated 26 October 2026

Komodo Island dragons photography from a boat trip is ranger-led: treks start at Loh Liang and the stop lasts about 2 hours. On the 3D2N route it follows Padar on day 2. Rangers set the distance, so lens choice matters more than position. Park tickets are never in the fare.

What the trek is and how long it takes

Treks start at the Loh Liang station. A ranger leads every one of them. Nobody walks the trails alone.

Short, medium and long trails exist, and the trek runs from 45 to 120 minutes depending on the one you take. The routes set aside about 2 hours at the stop. On the 3D2N route it follows Padar and breakfast on day 2.

The dragons are wild. A sighting is not guaranteed, and the ranger decides where the group walks. This is not a zoo, and the route is not a stage.

Distance, rangers and what to carry

Rangers set the distance between you and an animal, and the park rules apply to everyone on the trail. The ranger's call on the day is the rule.

That makes the lens the real variable. A long lens keeps the frame full from wherever the ranger lets you stand. A phone cannot, so shoot wide with it and show the trail, the grass and the ranger beside the animal in one frame.

Wear closed shoes. Long sleeves or sunscreen help, because there is little shade. Carry water, your passport or ID, and the park ticket. Park entry and ranger fees are paid on top of the fare. A ticket costs IDR 250,000 for international guests and IDR 50,000 for Indonesian guests on weekdays.

A charged battery matters more than a second lens. The guide to photographing Komodo from a boat has the full kit list.

Komodo or Rinca for the dragons

Both islands have ranger-guided treks. Komodo Island starts at Loh Liang. Rinca starts at Loh Buaya, and it is the second-largest island in the park.

The Akassa routes call at Komodo. Rinca is not on the route, and we do not promise it. If Rinca is your plan, tell us at booking. We confirm in writing whether the captain can fit it in.

We cannot rank the two for dragon photographs from our notes, so we do not. Choose by the plan and the date, and tell us which you want.

Drone rules are a firm no on both. Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones.

Light on the trail

Morning is the best window. The route reaches Komodo after Padar and breakfast, which puts the trek in mid-morning, with the sun already climbing.

That is harder light than first light. Dry grass and bare earth reflect it, and shade is thin. Expose for the animal, not the sky, and keep a hat on between frames.

Light on the trail changes every few minutes as the group moves under trees and out into the open, and a ranger's pace sets the pace of the pictures. Slow down. Wait for the frame.

No sighting is guaranteed. If the trail is quiet, lunch on board and Pink Beach are still ahead of you.
