Private boat Padar sunrise
Updated 26 October 2026
A private boat Padar sunrise starts about an hour before first light: you leave the boat for the climb, which takes 25 to 45 minutes, and sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 by month. On the 3D2N route Padar is the first stop of day 2. Park tickets are never in the fare.
Why a boat gets you to the viewpoint first
First light. Padar ridge. It is the first stop of day 2 on the 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N routes, and nothing sits ahead of it. Breakfast waits on board for your return.
That order is the reason to come by private boat. The climb starts at first light on your party's clock, and no hotel transfer stands between you and the ridge. Where you anchor and spend the night is up to the captain and the weather.
July, August and December are the busiest months on the trail. A private boat picks its own start, but it cannot clear the ridge of other boats, and we promise no empty trail.

The climb: time, steps and shade
The climb to the main viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes, and the upper ridge takes longer. Difficulty is moderate. The path is short but steep, and loose stones turn a quick walk into a slow one if you wear the wrong shoes.
Pack shoes with grip and a head torch, because you leave the boat in the dark. A torch keeps both hands free for the camera strap and the rail, and the loose stones start within minutes.
Take water and a hat: the way up is in low light, the way down in full morning sun.
No dragons. Padar has none, and the whole point of the stop is the ridge and what it shows you at the hour the sun comes up behind it. This is not a beach stop, and the swim comes later in the day at Pink Beach.

Where to stand for the three bays
Three bays, each with differently colored sand, lie below the viewpoint. The direction of the light is the only rule that matters.
Sunrise comes from the east. Face it before the sun clears the horizon, and the ridge, the three bays and any boat anchored in them turn into silhouettes against the sky. Once the sun is up, turn your back to it. The bays take their color then.
Give the bays ten quiet minutes before you move along the ridge. The light changes faster than the path does, and a step to the side swaps a flat frame for a layered one. Go wide. All three bays fit.
Sunrise or sunset at Padar
The route puts Padar at sunrise. Sunset at Padar is not on it. Sunset belongs to Kalong, on the evening of day 1.
That split suits most plans. A sunrise ridge and a sunset bat flight are two different pictures, and both fit into one 3 day trip. If you want the ridge at sunset, tell us when you book. It isn't on the sample route, so we check with the captain and confirm in writing.
The Padar sunrise or sunset guide sets out the choice month by month. Sunrise by month for Padar sits in the table below. Times are approximate local times (WITA), and the wake-up call on board moves with them.

Tickets, sessions and the drone rule
Padar needs a park ticket: IDR 250,000 for international guests, IDR 50,000 for Indonesian guests on weekdays. Like the ranger fees, it's paid on top of the fare. The park fees page has the full list.
Padar entry is timed. The session for your date is confirmed in writing before you pay.
Flying a drone over the ridge is a separate permit, not part of the ticket. Padar is an allowed zone once you hold a SIMAKSI and a daily drone ticket, both applied for in advance. Drone footage is never promised. Our drone rules guide sets out the rule, the sources and the no-fly zones.
FAQ
What is the Padar Island sunrise hike like?
A short, steep climb of 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint over three bays. Parts of the path are loose. You start in the dark with a head torch, reach the ridge before the sun, and walk down in morning light. The stop lasts about 90 minutes.
How early should I leave for the Padar sunrise?
Leave the boat about an hour before the sun. Sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 by month, so the call time moves with the calendar. We confirm the hour for your month in writing before you sail.
How crowded is the Padar trail at sunrise?
July, August and December are the busiest months on the trail. A private boat sets its own start, but other boats climb too. We promise no empty ridge.
How fit do I need to be for Padar?
Moderate fitness is enough. The climb is short, 25 to 45 minutes, but steep and loose in parts. Wear shoes with grip, take it slowly and carry water. If a knee or a back is a concern, tell us before you book.
What do I wear for the Padar climb?
Shoes with grip, a head torch for the dark start, a hat and water. The way up is in low light and the way down is in full morning sun. Loose stones begin within minutes of the landing, so keep one hand free for the rail and the camera strap.
What if it rains on the morning of the hike?
The captain decides on the day. A wet path is loose and steep, and the climb can move or be skipped. The order of stops shown is an example, and no hour of light is guaranteed. We confirm any change with you before the boat moves.
