Komodo golden hour boat trip for photographers and creators
Updated 26 October 2026
A Komodo golden hour boat trip for photographers and creators uses the 3D2N route: Kalong at dusk on day 1, Padar before sunrise on day 2. The whole boat starts at IDR 45,000,000 (≈ USD 2,761); up to 10 guests sail on Giona, Derya or Akassa Cruise and up to 18 on Semesta Voyages.
Where the light is, hour by hour
Four stops carry the light on the 3D2N route. The rest of the day is shade, swimming and lunch.
- Padar · first light · sunrise from the east, between 05:31 and 06:18 by month · climb 25 to 45 minutes, head torch
- Pink Beach · low sun brings out the pale pink · the example route arrives after Komodo, in higher light · about 90 minutes
- Kalong · dusk · sunset in the west, between 17:49 and 18:27 by month · flying foxes leave the mangroves, no landing
- Taka Makassar · morning at low tide · a crescent sandbank inside shallow reef · about 60 minutes, opens day 3
Times are approximate, in local time (WITA). Cloud and haze own the sky, so no hour of light is guaranteed, and the captain orders the stops on the day.
Dawn on the Padar ridge, dusk at Kalong
The 3D2N route is a shot list with two fixed points: dusk at Kalong closes day 1, and first light at Padar opens day 2. Everything else bends around those two.
- 1. Day 1, late morning: Kelor, a short climb to a bay view.
- 2. Dusk: Kalong, flying foxes against the sky.
- 3. Day 2, before sunrise: Padar ridge, three bays.
- 4. Mid-morning: Komodo Island with a ranger.
- 5. After lunch: Pink Beach, then Manta Point.
- 6. Day 3: Taka Makassar sandbank at low tide.
Padar is busiest in July, August and December. Your own boat sets its own start, but it can't clear the ridge of other boats. We promise no empty trail.
Kalong is watched from the boat. The first bats leave about 15 minutes after sunset, and the stream lasts about 30 minutes. Be on deck before the sun touches the water.
Stills, reels and a deck that stays out of the frame
Space on deck changes by boat. Derya's sundeck is white daybeds with gray cushions under a white sail awning, and the awning keeps the sun off a screen. Akassa Cruise has a sundeck with lazy chairs and a stern deck, and its Laut Legendary Suite has a private balcony on the middle deck. On Semesta Voyages, the upper sundeck holds a rattan sofa and daybeds. Giona's foredeck lounge has bean bags on green turf and a folding wooden table under a canopy.
A power outlet in the cabin is not promised on any boat. Bring a power bank for every device and top up every battery at the hotel before the 10:00 boarding.
Connectivity is thin. Three boats have local Wi-Fi, not satellite. Semesta Voyages has Starlink satellite internet. We promise no speed. Save uploads for shore.
Video needs quiet deck time, and the route has it. Kalong at dusk and Padar at first light are the quiet hours, and the boat holds only your party.
Drone and filming: permits first
Flying a drone in Komodo National Park needs a SIMAKSI permit and a daily drone ticket, applied for in advance. Kalong, Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones. We don't promise drone footage, and holding a permit is not the same as having the shot.
Paid shoots are a different matter. Commercial, documentary and pre-wedding shoots use another permit category. We do not sell commercial-shoot charters. Handheld personal photography needs no separate permit beyond the entry ticket.
A guide, or photo and video documentation, is extra on a private charter, quoted on request. On the Friday departure both are included.
Before you plan a shot around a drone, read our drone rules guide for the rule, the zones and the sources.
What a private charter changes for a creator
For the length of the trip the boat is yours. Your party sets the pace at each stop, inside the order the captain decides on the day. Nobody else's snorkel group waits on the deck.
Head count decides both the boat and the split. Ten or fewer go on Giona (4 cabins, the lowest price), Derya (4 cabins, more space) or Akassa Cruise (3 suites, the most private). Eleven to 18 go on Semesta Voyages.
A shoot with a model and a second shooter is a party of 2 to 4 and fits any of the three boats of 10. A shoot of 11 or more people goes on Semesta Voyages. Its upper sundeck, open-air dining deck and indoor lounge give three places to set up.
A party of 4 on Giona pays IDR 11,250,000 (≈ USD 690) each for 3D2N. Six on Derya pay IDR 10,830,000 (≈ USD 664) each. Ten on Akassa Cruise pay IDR 7,800,000 (≈ USD 479) each. A party of 14 on Semesta Voyages pays IDR 8,290,000 (≈ USD 509) each.
June to August costs more, and we quote it in writing. Park tickets and ranger fees are on top.
FAQ
Can I photograph Kalong with a phone?
Yes. A phone shows the sky, the horizon color and a thread of bats. A long lens is the only way to show single animals. Steady the phone on the rail, shoot short bursts and turn the flash off. Kalong is watched from the boat.
Can I fly a drone in Komodo National Park?
With a SIMAKSI permit and a daily drone ticket, applied for in advance, in the zones the park allows. Kalong, Komodo Island and Rinca are no-fly zones. We never promise drone footage. The drone rules guide has the rule and the sources.
Is there internet or Wi-Fi on a Komodo boat trip?
Akassa Cruise, Derya and Giona have local Wi-Fi, not satellite. Semesta Voyages has Starlink satellite internet. We promise no speed on any boat.
Can I charge camera batteries on the boat?
We do not promise a power outlet in the cabin on any boat. Bring a power bank for each device and charge cameras at your hotel before boarding at 10:00. Ask us in writing if a specific charger matters.
Can I film a commercial shoot on board?
We do not sell commercial-shoot charters. Commercial, documentary and pre-wedding shoots use another park permit category. Tell us what you plan and we say in writing what we can and cannot arrange. Personal photography needs no separate permit beyond the entry ticket.
